The Morning Light – A Poetic Verse of the Qur’an

Transliteration of the Arabic:

W’alleili idhaa sajaa

Ma wadda’aka rabbuka wamaa qalaa

Wallaakharatu khayrun l’laka minal-lula

Walasawfa yu’utika rabbuka fatardaa

Aalam yajidka yatimaan fawaa

Wawajadaka daallaa fahadaa

Wawajadaka ‘aa’ilaan fa’ghnaa

Fa’mmaal yatima falaa taqhar

Wa’ammaal saa’ila falaa tanhar

Wa’ammaa bini’imati rabbuka fahaddath

English Translation:

With the brightness that elucidates the morning,

And with the night when it covers all that is dark,

Your Lord has not left you, not has he ever hated you,

And indeed Heaven is better for you than this mortal life,

And your Lord is going to gift you this, and you will be satisfied!

[O Muhammad] did He not find you as an orphan and give you shelter?

He found you wandering, and guided you,

And He found you poor, and gave you self-reliance and success

So in regards to an orphan, do not oppress [him]!

And as far the beggar, do not repel him!

But as for the favor of your Lord, tell of [His splendor].
